Americans consume more sugar than any other nation, possibly because we can produce it. Though the honor of first granulating sugar is given to a Louisiana planter, it was a free man of color—the Haitian chemist Antoine Morin, in 1795—who made the discovery, working for a Louisiana planter. The first crop yielded twelve thousand dollars, $3,000,000 in today’s dollars, for the planter—and the new industry saved the struggling Louisiana colony, unprofitable until then. Sugar was already a cash crop in Haiti, fueled with slave labor. It was difficult to farm and to harvest and the climate brutal, as was slavery. It provoked a huge demand in Europe as in America and was one of the reasons France contested the Haitian Revolution. Haiti won independence after more than 25 years of fighting but is still paying “reparations,” the source of their crippling national debt. Our own churches support a school cafeteria program in our Sister Parish in Haiti. Contact Cathy Bodin if you would like to help! [email protected] or (301)447-2690 |

If you are a new volunteer or a previous volunteer for St. Anthony Shrine or Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish you must have all the required training complete online through the “Virtus Program Screening for Volunteers” to be an active volunteer. ***Renewal is every five years, and you will be notified when you need to update. Please contact Karen Davis at the office before you start so she can send you the correct training needed by email. Once training is complete, background clears and references are complete, you will be contacted when you are ready to volunteer. *****Mother Seton School, Seton Shrine, Chesterton Academy and All Home School Groups: Volunteers in these groups must complete all the Virtus requirements that are accepted through the Archdiocese of Baltimore and paid for through your own entity. All Home School Groups or Mother Seton School are separate entities from the parish. If your group uses the facilities through a current registered parishioner who volunteers in a parish ministry, you must provide a list of volunteers for St. Anthony/Our Lady of Mt. Carmel records that comply with the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Virtus requirements. ***NOTE: If your Virtus has expired and you have been notified to complete your certification for your 5 year renewal from the Parish Office, please do so at this time. The Archdiocese has strict guidelines we must follow if you are a volunteer in contact with children. If the renewal is not complete by your deadline, you will be deactivated and removed from the list. |
